Crochet Frankenstein Cozy Pattern

Frankenstein Coffee Cozy Pattern

Hello friends!  I have a new pattern to share with you today…the Frankenstein Coffee Cozy!  This pattern is part 2 of a 3 part series of spooky coffee cozy friends!

Part 1 – Candy Corn Coffee Cozy
Part 3 – Ghost Coffee Cozy

With Halloween around the corner I thought it would be fun to make a few inspired cozies to go along with the spooky characters and pumpkin spiced lattes of the season.  I really enjoyed this project and hope you do too.

It makes for a great stash buster, and can be made with any worsted weight acrylic yarn. For this project I used Michaels brand Loops and Thread Impeccable yarn.  The cozy works up quickly and easily and is oh so cute!

Pattern Note:

Just a word of warning, the most difficult part of this project is attaching the eyes.  In order for the cozy to fit properly, the safety eyes will need to be clipped with clippers, and once they are clipped it can be difficult to put the safety back on.  You will need to have strong hands or a friend with strong hands nearby to help out out with that part!  Other than that, this pattern is smooth sailing!

  • 5.5 mm crochet hook
  • Loops and Thread Impeccable Yarn in Grass, Amethyst, and Black (or any worsted weight acrylic yarn will work)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • wire cutters (and a responsible adult 🙂 )

Key:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch

Pattern

With color amethyst, chain 29

**For this first round, you will be working in the back bar of the crochet chain.**

Taking care not to twist your stitches, join in round with the back bar of your first chain with a sl st.

Round 1: Ch1, starting in the same back bar as your chain 1, sc, and make 1 sc in each back bar around the entire chain; join with 1st sc of round using a sl st (29)

Round 2: Ch1, starting in the same stitch as your ch 1, sc, and sc in each stitch to the end of round; join with 1st sc of round using a sl st (29)

Round 3: repeat round 2

Cut Amethyst, and attach Grass using the Seamless Color Change Technique in this post.

Rounds 4 – 8: repeat round 2

Round 9: repeat round 2 but do not join

Cut Grass and attach black using same technique as above.

Making the hair

Round 10:  Ch 1, starting in the same stitch as your ch 1, sc, and sc in next stitch; for next stitch, make your single crochet in the stitch of the row below your next stitch (shown with arrows).  Please see below for visual:

Repeat this 8 more times, sc in next two stitches; join with the 1st sc of round using sl st (29)

Round 11: repeat round 2

Secure end and cut yarn. Weave in all ends.

Eye placement

You will need a responsible adult with strong fingers 🙂

In order for the cozy to fit properly on your coffee cup the safety eyes will need to be clipped.  If you look at your safety eyes, you will see that there are ridges on the ends.  Take the wire cutters and clip the safety eyes so that only two ridges remain on the safety eyes.  See below for a visual.  The arrows below are placed where you will want to make your cuts.

Using the photos as a guide, center the eyes, placing them 4-5 rows down from the top and leave 1 stitch between the two eyes.  Secure the eyes by placing the back onto the safety eyes.  (You will need someone with strong fingers to push the back on 🙂 )

Mouth Placement

Using the photos as a guide stitch on the mouth with your yarn needle and embroidery floss.  Secure and weave in any tails.

Get your cup of coffee and enjoy your new cozy!  It’s scary but not toooo scary! 🙂
