Star Dust Knitted Garter Stitch Scarf Pattern

The Star Dust Knitted Garter Stitch Scarf is made with Caron Baby Cakes yarn which is a self-striping yarn.  With self-striping yarn, you get the color change without having to switch out your colors or weave in additional ends – win, win!

Hello and welcome back to my blog!  A little catch-up on myself… I just had a follow-up knee surgery this past week to tweak a surgery I had back in July, and am currently on the mend.  With the surgeries I’ve been off and on crutches for the past 5 months so this has given me ample time to catch up on much needed knitting and crochet time!

Since I’ve had extra time, be excited for new winter projects to be popping up soon!!  Stay tuned!

This scarf is one of the brain-children projects that came to life during my time on the mend – and it has been such a fun and relaxing project.

I absolutely love this scarf because it’s plush, long, and VERY easy to make!  The yarn used in this pattern is Caron Baby Cakes yarn and as the name implies with “baby yarn” it’s super soft.

The colors in this yarn cake palate are so pretty too – neutral with just enough color pop so it can still match just about anything!  I picture this being a great layering accessory for a plane ride (why are planes always so cold?!)… I will probably end up wearing it on our flight from NC to PA for Christmas!

Do you think you will give this pattern a try?  If so how will you style it?  Let me know in the comments below!

  1. This is pretty and I think I can handle it with my basic knitting skills. I’d like to modify the dimensions and make it a throw or baby blanket. Thanks for sharing your patterns!

  2. I am making this for a friend with the cake yarn and the only thing I do not like is the fact you cannot control where the color change you have I love the pattern and hope to enlarge it for a baby blanket

    1. Hi Jacqueline! This pattern would still look great if you used multiple color skeins in the colors of your choosing, that way you can control when the color changes occur.

  3. Hi I love your star dust scarf and would love to make it can this be transferred to make on the round knight knitter looms ?

  4. Thank for the scarf pattern. I have been knitting for about 25 years, so the pattern is easy and beautiful.

I hope you feel better soon and happy knitting!

    1. Yay! I am so happy you enjoyed the pattern! And thank you, it’s been a long road to recovery but am doing much better now :). Happy knitting to you as well!

  5. I LOVE the yarn color you used for this scarf. Was ready to run out and get it but…..
Unfortunately I am not able to find it anywhere.
    Walmart, Michaels, Joann’s.
Where did you purchase the yarn?
Thanks for the pattern and inspiration!
    Have a great day.
    Mona.

  6. I wrote Caron for information about this particular color not being availabel anywhere.
This is what they wrote me back.

    Dear Mona,

Unfortunately this product is exclusive to Michaels it was only available for a limited time only. It is currently discontinued until next year as of right now we are not certain when it is coming back.

If you require further assistance please let us know.

    Yours truly,

  7. My sister asked me to make her a scarf. That pattern she showed me was something I knew I would be bored with fairly quickly, so off I go to find something that is quick to knit without putting me to sleep. Think I’ve found something that will make us both happy.

  8. I’m knitting this pattern now. Oddly, on the 11th row I end up knitting 3 not 2. It looks perfectly fine, so not worried. Crazy

  9. Hi, I’m very new to knitting, but really want to try this pattern. Could you explain what rows are, and what you mean for row 11? Im not sure what “repeat from * 4x, k2” means! Thank you!!

    1. Hi Alex! A row is a line of knitting, and row 11 instructs to *k2, k2tog, yo, k1; repeat from * 4x, k2 which means to *k2, k2tog, yo, k1 and then repeat the instructions listed after the * 4 more times. Once you have completed the repeat for a total of 5 times, you will end the row by knitting 2.

  10. Hi! I am new to kitting and thought this would be a great pattern to start me off! I was just wondering if you could tell me what “2 skeins” means? I have found the wool you have used here and it comes in 100g balls? How many of these would I need?

  11. I love ? this pattern, is it possible to use two strands of yarn as I have no lion brand available?? Just wondering ?? thanks

    1. Hi Beverly! For the Star Dust Knitted scarf, you probably wouldn’t need to double up if you’re using a comparable worsted weight yarn. The Cotton Candy Knit Scarf that I just released last week is similar to this one and uses a bulky yarn (which I think you may be referring to). Changing the yarn, will alter the size, but doubling up should work. If you want it to be the same size as the scarf I made, you’ll want to make a swatch and compare gauge. If you can match your gauge to that of the pattern, then your end result would measure to the same size as the original.

      1. Ok ?, so I did finish this pattern using single strand and I love ? it, didn’t have the yarn pattern calls for but I again love it.☺☺ Thanks a million

    1. Hi Taylor! Thank you so much for your purchase! The width of my scarf in the pattern came out to about 7 inches wide. So my gauge for this ended up being 27 stitches equals 7 inches. If yours is coming out smaller, then your stitches may be a little tighter than mine.

You can try sizing your needle up a size to make your stitches a little larger if needed. I used Caron Baby Cakes, which is very similar to the Caron Big Cakes. Both are listed as 4-medium weight, but the Caron Baby Cakes yarn feels a little thicker in my opinion, and has a slightly different composition. Though both yarns will yield beautiful results!

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions please let me know!

      1. I’m having the same problem. Also using the Caron big cakes. Casting on I’m barely at 5″ width. I was thinking rather than getting new needles it might be easier to just make It wider (certainly have enough yarn). But I don’t know how that would translate once I get to row 11. I’m a beginner and haven’t a clue how many extra stitches to cast on in order to add maybe one more repeat.

  12. I am new to knitting and trying to do this lovely pattern -I was wondering When you knit row 12 do you knit individual stitches on the knit two together from row 11 and what about the yarn over stitch – this row is confusing to me

    1. Hi Sue – may I ask what type of yarn you’re using? If you’re using a very fine yarn your scarf would come out smaller. Also, may I ask if you’ve started knitting yet? Your cast ons will appear smaller in width, but once you knit into them, it should widen out.

  13. I’m confused, do I increase the number of stitches to have 27 again after Row 11? Do I k2tog and then yo or are those both done in the same stitch?

    1. Hi Caitlyn! For Row 11, you’ll k2tog, which decreases you by one stitch. You’ll gain that decreased stitch back by doing your yarn over. The k2tog and yarn over are done separately.

  14. I couldn’t find the Caron Baby Cakes yarn, so I’m using the regular Caron Cakes yarn in buttercream, and it’s coming out great so far! I can’t wait to finish it. Thanks for sharing this pattern!

  15. Hi! I love this scarf, its beautiful. I’m having a hard time finding Caron Baby Cakes. What would you recommend as a replacement and how much yarn would I need?

    Thank you

  16. HI! Lovely pattern, but I’m having some issues getting going. I cast on 27 stitches as instructed and did my first 1-10 rows, however, on row 11 I’m unable to repeat the stitches (*k2, k2tog, yo, k1) for a total of 5 times. I can get 4x the stitches but end in a weird place. Should I be combining any two stitches? I feel like I’m missing a key step or something. SOS!

  17. First, I’m so glad I found your page, I am learning so much! ! I am a super beginner and I am going to try this pattern. I have been practicing first before using my actual yarn that I want to use to make sure I can do it. So far the only problem is at the end of my row 11, I knit 3 in the end not 2. I do have 27 stitches though. What did I do wrong?

  18. Beautiful and easy patern. I would like to make a shawl with caron Latte cakes I. Have 2 rolls and would like to know how many stiches I need to make the scarf larger for a shawl.

  19. I noticed in the remarks that people are having issue on Row 11 and maybe 12. Is there an error in this pattern? I’ve not tried working this scarf up yet and am a seasoned knitter so maybe there isn’t a problem but I thought I’d check before I started. The YO’s add a nice interest to what would be a fairly dull scarf. I’m also going to see about widening for a Prayer Shawl pattern. Thanks for putting that out there!
