Docksider Tunisian Crochet Scarf Pattern

The Docksider Tunisian Crochet Scarf is the perfect companion for boating and hanging out by the water. Crochet this super fun and quick project right along with me using the pattern and video tutorial below!

I’ve been wanting something in my wardrobe that has some bright colors and a nautical feel and thought the best way to accomplish this *quickly* is to make myself a scarf. (Because I really do want to make a crochet sweater, but that feels a little intimidating at the moment, lol!)

I recently relocated back to my hometown and there’s a beautiful lake nearby that I’m frequently at and its usually pretty chilly, so it was really fun to sport this scarf when I shot a few of these photos.

The Technique

This pattern uses the Tunisian crochet technique, which requires a special Tunisian crochet hook. If you haven’t already tried it, you’ve come to the right place! If you already know the basics of crochet, I’m confident this tutorial can help get you on your way. If you’re looking for a smaller Tunisian crochet project to start out with first though, I highly suggest this dishcloth tutorial.

Tunisian Crochet

• The Tunisian crochet technique uses a special Tunisian hook.
• Each row of Tunisian crochet is comprised of two passes – the first pass and the second pass.
• All crocheting is completed on the front side of the work. You will not be turning your work between working each row.

Main Body

• The main body of the scarf is worked flat in Tunisian crochet.
• Color changes
  • To change colors between the color blocks, work the second pass of a Row 2 repeat until you have two loops left on your hook. Complete last yarn over with the new color. Continue working Row 2 repeats for the designated number of rows.
• When working the body color blocks, you will notice that the side edge opposite of the color change tails, that the edge color block stitches appear to shift down 1 stitch. We will clean this edge up when we work the border.

Bind Off

• Upon completing all rows of the scarf and ending after finishing a repeat of Row 2 – second pass, it will be time to bind off.
• Bind Off:
  • To bind off, insert hook into the front bar of the next stitch, YO, draw up a loop, slide the new loop through the loop that is already on the hook. Repeat process for remaining stitches.

Border

• The border of the scarf is worked in single crochet stitch, with a crochet hook. When working the border, you will be transitioning between colors so that the border edge will match the color block it corresponds with.
• Color Changes
  • Leave long tails when switching between border stitch colors. Tails will be used to clean up the edges when finishing.
  • Take care to not crochet over your tails as work!

Docksider Tunisian Crochet Scarf Pattern

Read NOTES section before beginning.

BODY OF THE SCARF

With main color, ch 40

Row 1 – First Pass: Working in the back bars of your foundation chain, starting in the second chain from your hook, insert your hook, yo and draw up a loop on your hook, insert your hook into the next back bar, yo and draw up a loop; repeat this process across the row. Do not turn work.

Row 1 – Second Pass: yo, pull through 1st loop (counts as a chain), *yo, pull through 2 loops; repeat from * to end of the row. Do not turn work.

Row 2 – First Pass: One at a time, insert your hook into the front bars of each stitch, yo and draw up a loop, draw up one loop for each stitch across the row; for the last stitch draw up through the first chain of previous row (inserting your hook into two loops of the chain). Do not turn work.

Row 2 – Second Pass: yo, pull through 1st loop (counts as a chain), *yo, pull through 2 loops; repeat from * to end of the row. Do not turn work.

Row 3 and beyond: Repeat instructions for Row 2 (both first and second passes).

After Row 3, cut MC and attach CC3, and continue in the following color sequence. See NOTES for the technique used for the color changes.

Color Sequence:

• CC3 – 34 Rows
• MC – 16 Rows
• CC2 – 13 Rows
• MC – 10 Rows
• CC1 – 7 Rows
• CC3 – Rows
• MC – 28 Rows
• CC4 – 9 Rows
• MC – 26 Rows
• CC1 – 15 Rows
• MC – 20 Rows
• CC2 – 10 Rows
• MC – 12 Rows

Bind off. Cut yarn and fasten off.

BORDER

See NOTES before proceeding.

With the front side facing up, rotate the scarf so that the bind off row we just completed is positioned towards the top.

Insert your 6.5 mm crochet hook into the first stitch of the row. This stitch will act as one of our corners. Attach MC.

Step 1: Ch1, and make 3 sc in that same corner st, sc in each st across the row until you reach last st, make 3 sc in the last st of the row.

Step 2: Sc along the side of your scarf into each side edge st (catching the top 2 yarn stands for each side st) until two st in the current color block remain unworked.

Step 3: On the 2nd to last stitch of this color bock, begin a sc in this stitch but stop before completing the YO of the sc. Cut MC, attach new color, and complete the sc with the new color.

Step 4: In order to clean up our edge, we will want to cover up as much as we can of the next st. Instead of crocheting into the top 2 strands, crochet around all 4 strands of the next side st.

(We will clean up any remaining color “peek throughs” later on!)

Repeat Steps 2 – 4 for the rest of this side of the scarf only using the corresponding colors.

Once you reach the next corner, make 3 sc in the same corner st. Sc in each stitch across the bottom edge until you reach the last stitch of the row. Make 3 sc in the last st.

Remaining Side

It’s now time to work the remaining side. For this side, you will crochet into each side stitch with the corresponding color.

Step 1: Sc along the side of your scarf into each side edge st (catching the top 2 yarn stands for each side st) until 1 st in the current color block remain unworked.

Step 2: On the last stitch of this color bock, begin a sc in this stitch but stop before completing the YO of the sc. Cut color, attach new color, and complete the sc with the new color.

Repeat Remaining Side Steps 1 and 2 until you meet back around to the beginning. Join with the 1st st of the round using a sl st.

Cut yarn and fasten off.

FINISHING

Using a yarn needle, cover any remaining color “peek through” spots by sewing over these spots with a corresponding color block tail. Once the spot is covered, weave in the remainder of the tail on the back of your work, once the spot is covered.

Repeat for all remaining “peek through” spots. Weave in any tails that remain.

BLOCKING

Tunisian crochet has a tendency to curl. To fix this, you’ll want to *carefully* steam block your garment.

To steam block – gently apply heated steam all over garment to until the yarn has softened and any curling has relaxed. Do not over steam heat. Allow to dry.
