  • p2tog purl 2 stitches together as if they one (1 st dec)

  • ssk slip, slip knit: slip two stitches knitwise one at a time onto right-hand needle, insert left-hand needle into these stitches and knit them together as if they are one (1 st dec)
  • st/s stitch/es

Construction:

  • This pattern is perfect for knitters learning how to make socks! The socks are worked from the cuff down using the Magic Loop method.
    • Needle #1: Holds the first half of the stitches (bottom of the foot).
    • Needle #2: Holds the second half of the stitches (top of the foot/instep).
  • If using DPNs, I suggest splitting the stitches with two needles for Needle #1 and one needle for Needle #2.
  • The heart detail is added on at the end once the socks are complete using duplicate stitch.

Sizing Notes:

This sock pattern is written for 3 sizes and is designed to fit a foot circumference of 7.5 (8, 9)” / 19 (20, 23) cm with about 0.5” / 1 cm of negative ease.

Sizes: S (M, L):

  • Small (S): Fits US women’s shoe size 6–7.5
  • Medium (M): Fits US women’s shoe size 8–9.5
  • Large (L): Fits US women’s shoe size 10–11.5

If possible, measure your foot or try the socks on as you knit. If that’s not an option, use the following foot length ranges:

  • Small (S): 7.5-8”/19-20 cm
  • Medium (M): 8.5-9.5”/22-24 cm
  • Large (L): 10-11”/25-29 cm

For the best fit, knit the foot section until you reach either 2” less than your total foot length or the tip of your pinky toe before starting the toe decreases.

Written Pattern Starts Here:

Read complete pattern and all notes before beginning.

Make 2.

Cuff

Loosely CO 56 (64, 72) st

Work 2×2 ribbing for about 1.25″ or 14 rounds.

Ankle

Work in stockinette (knit all rounds) until piece measure about 4”/10 cm from the CO edge or about 36 rounds.

Heel Flap

The heel flap will be worked flat (back and forth in rows) over the first half of the stitches: 28 (32, 36) sts. The remaining stitches will remain on hold for the instep (top of the foot).

Row 1: *sl 1, k1; repeat from * to end of row, 28 (32, 36) sts.

Row 2: sl 1, p across to end of row, 28 (32, 36) sts.

Repeat Heel Flap Rows 1-2 a total of 16 (20, 24) times for 32 (40, 48) heel flap rows. End the heel flap once you have 16 (20, 24) slip stitches along each side edge.

Heel Turn

The heel turn is worked flat over the heel flap stitches only: 28 (32, 36) stitches.

Row 1: sl 1, knit 15 (17, 19), ssk, k1, turn

Row 2: sl 1, purl 5 (5, 7) p2tog, p1, turn

Row 3: sl 1, k to one stitch before the gap, ssk, k1, turn

Row 4: sl 1 p to one stitch before the gap, p2tog, p1, turn

Repeat Rows 3-4 until all stitches have been worked. On the final repeats of Rows 3-4, you will not have enough stitches to work the additional k1 or p1 at the end of the row.

At the end of the last Row 4 repeat you should have 14 (18, 22) sts remaining.

Gusset

The gusset is worked in the round. You will pick up stitches along the edges of the heel flap and join to resume knitting in the round.

Setup round:

Knit 7 (9, 11), pm (new BOR). Knit the remaining 7 (9, 11) heel sts.

Pick up and knit 16 (20, 24) sts along first side of the heel flap edge (about 1 st per slipped st).

Pick up 2 extra sts in the gap between the heel flap and the instep to avoid holes. Adjust placement as needed to prevent larger holes.

Pm, knit across  28 (32, 36) instep stitches, pm.

Pick up 2 extra sts in the gap between the heel flap and the instep.

Pick up and knit 16 (20, 24) sts along the second side of the heel flap edge (about 1 st per slipped st).

Knit the remaining 7 (9, 11) heel st.

You will now have about 78 (94, 110) total stitches. 28 (32, 36) instep stitches. 50 (62, 74) stitches on the sole (heel + gusset).

At this point, your magic loop should look like a triangle. 28 (32, 36) st for instep and about 25 (31, 37) st for each side of the gusset. If your gusset stitches are off by a stitch or two here, don’t worry about it!

If your circular needles are not long enough to work comfortably, you may want to switch to DPNs.

Gusset Decreases

You will now decrease the gusset stitches to return to the original number of stitches for the foot: 56 (64, 72).

Round 1 (dec round): knit to 3 st before the first marker, k2tog, k1, sl m, knit across instep stitches, sl m, k1, ssk, knit to end of round.

Round 2: knit all stitches.

Repeat Gusset Rounds 1-2 until you have decreased to 56 (64, 72) stitches total: 28 (32, 36) sts each for the instep and sole.

Foot

The new BOR is at the same position as before the heel flap—on the right-hand side of the sole.

Knit all rounds until length reaches the top of your pinky toe, or about 2” less than your total foot length (measured from the back of your heel to the tip of your longest toe). If making as a gift, and you don’t have access to the sock recipient’s foot length, you can find foot length ranges in the Notes section.

Toe

Round 1 (dec round):

Needle #1: k1, ssk, k across to last 3 st, k2tog, k2

Needle #2: repeat instructions for Needle #1.

4 st decreased.

Round 2: knit all st

Repeat Rounds 1-2 until 24 (28, 32) st remain. 12 (14, 16) st per needle.

Cut yarn leaving about a 24” tail.

Seaming the toe

Fasten off with Kitchener’s Stitch. For extra help, see video tutorial.

Setup: Hold the two needles parallel, with Needle #1 in the front, and Needle #2 in the back. Working yarn should be coming from Needle #2. Thread tail with a yarn needle.

Step by step instructions:

Needle #1:

Insert yarn needle into the first st (of Needle #1) as if to knit. Slide this stitch off of the needle.

Insert yarn needle into the next st (of Needle #1) as if to purl. Leave this stitch on the needle.

Needle #2:

Insert the yarn needle into the first st (of Needle #2) as if to purl. Slide this stitch off of the needle.

Insert the yarn needle into the next st (of Needle #2) as if to knit. Leave this stitch on the needle.

Repeat these steps until 2 stitches remain (1 stitch left on each needle).

On Needle #1: Insert the yarn needle as if to knit. Slide the stitch off the needle.

On Needle #2: Insert the yarn needle as if to purl. Slide the stitch off of the needle.

Finishing

Gently pull the yarn to tighten the seamed stitches, then pull the tail to the inside of the sock and weave it in to secure.

Weave in all remaining ends. Repeat for second sock.

Block

To wet block, soak socks in cool water with a small amount of mild soap or wool wash for about 10 minutes. Remove socks from water bath gently squeezing out as much water as possible. Do not wring.

Place inside a folded towel. Roll the towel and press it to remove remaining excess water. Place on sock blockers or lay flat and allow to fully dry.

Heart Detail

Use stitch markers or scrap yarn to plan the placement of your duplicate stitch heart (shown on the chart). The heart is 11 stitches wide by 11 rows tall and should be centered over the outer ankle of each sock. If you’re new to duplicate stitch, check out the video tutorial for guidance.
