Tips for Making a Jumbo Crochet Blanket
Working with jumbo yarn is a bit different than standard yarn. Here are my top tips for success:
- Keep your foundation chain loose: Jumbo yarn can be heavy. Keeping a relaxed tension on your foundation chain will help make row 1 much easier.
- Support the weight: This blanket gets big and squishy fast! To keep the weight of the blanket from pulling on your stitches, try working at a table so the surface supports the project as it grows.
- Check your gauge: Because the stitches are so large, being off by even half a stitch can significantly change the amount of yarn you need.

This Project Is Kinda a Workout!
Because we are using a massive 25 mm hookand extra-thick jumbo yarn, this project is a bit of a workout! Unlike standard crochet, this pattern involves movement through your entire upper body, including your arms and shoulders. I found it totally manageable and fun, but if you have existing shoulder or arm issues, please take it slow and listen to your body. I’m not a health professional, so just use your best judgment before diving into this big, squishy project!

I made a video tutorial to help walk you through this project! To follow along, click on the play button below.
Skill Level
This project is beginner friendly as it only uses half double crochet stitches. However, if you are truly brand new to crochet, I highly suggest that you get the basics down and have completed at least 1-2 simple projects before trying this one out. The fuzzy yarn mixed with being such an enormous size might be difficult for those just learning. If you’re a determined beginner who’s up for a challenge, go for it!

Notes
Here are important notes about this pattern.
Construction
This pattern is worked flat in a half double crochet ribbing. The chain length determines the length of the blanket and the rows determine the width. This blanket is easily customizable by adjusting the number of your starting foundation chain as well as how many rows you complete. Please note that adjusting stitch and row count will alter the amount of yarn needed to complete the project.
Special Techniques
Half Double Crochet Back Loop Only (hdcblo): To complete a hdcblo, you will complete your half double crochet stitch into the back loop only of the stitch you’re working into. The entire project is made with this technique and is what gives the blanket a beautiful ribbed texture.
