Here is why this project belongs in your queue:

  • Beginner Friendly: Unlike many glove patterns that require working in the round with double pointed needles, these are worked flat back and forth in rows.
  • 7 Sizes Included: I’ve included sizing for the whole family, from small child to adult.
  • No “Right” or “Left”: Both gloves are made identically, so you don’t have to worry about making two different gloves.
  • Stash Buster: You need less than one skein of worsted weight yarn, making this a budget-friendly gift idea.

The Perfect Pattern for Variegated Yarn

We all have that one skein of hand-dyed or variegated yarn that looked amazing in the store but pools weirdly when crocheted.

My biggest tip with using variegated yarn is finding projects that have small circumferences. Items with small circumferences allow the colors in the yarn to repeat more uniformly throughout the entire project and in the end they tend to look more intentional instead of just busy.

Skill Level

This project is beginner friendly, but assumes you’re comfortable with the following skills:

Finished Measurements & Sizing

These fingerless gloves are designed to have no ease, meaning the finished circumference will match that of your hand circumference.

How To Pick Your Size

Measure the circumference of the recipient’s hand (either you or the person you’re making it for), and pick the Finished Circumference size that matches that measurement.

Example: The model has a 7.5″ hand circumference and is wearing a Size 5 (7.5″ / 43 cm assembled circumference).

How To Measure Your Hand Circumference

Take a flexible measuring tape and measure all the way around your hand at your knuckles (with fingers spread apart). This measurement is your hand circumference.

Note: If the fingerless gloves are for a gift or you simply do not have the hand measurement of the recipient, use the common measurements on the following page to help select the best size.

Common Hand Measurements

Below are ranges for common head sizes. Each group has a bit of overlap.

  • Toddler/Child: 5-6.5″ (13-17 cm)
  • Tween: 6-7″ (15-18 cm)

Notes

Here are important notes about this pattern.

Construction

  • The gloves are worked flat back and forth in rows and then seamed together to form a tube, leaving an opening for the thumb.
  • There is no right and left, both fingerless gloves are made identically.
  • Each row is divided into three sections: Wrist Cuff, Body, and Finger Cuff. Stitch markers are used to separated these sections.

Working the Pattern

Stitch Placement: The Body is worked in a single crochet/double crochet combination stitch. These stitches are always worked into the single crochets of the previous row. You will always skip the double crochet stitches for the entirety of the project.

Special Techniques

From Row 2 onwards, all stitches will be worked into the back loops only.

Using a yarn needle and starting at the Wrist Cuff, *mattress stitch your fingerless glove together working up about:

8 (10, 12, 14)(14, 14, 16) sts. Cut yarn. Don’t secure yet. (*See video for help with this.)

Rotate work so that the Finger Cuff end is positioned towards the bottom. Attach yarn to a bottom-most stitch and mattress stitch up about: 5 (9, 7, 9) (9, 11, 11) sts.

Try on your glove to ensure you like the placement of the thumb, and adjust if needed. Once you’ve established your preferred fit, secure both seam tails.

Finishing

Weave in all ends.

Repeat for second fingerless glove.

Enjoy!

Crochet Fingerless Gloves FAQ

How much yarn do I need for this project? These gloves are a fantastic stash buster! Depending on the size you are making, you will need between 55 and 190 yards of medium #4 weight yarn. For all the sizes, a single skein of I Love This Yarn! (or similar worsted weight yarn) is more than enough to make a full pair.

How do I choose the right size? This free fingerless gloves crochet pattern is designed to have zero ease, which means the finished glove should match your hand measurement exactly. To find your size, use a flexible measuring tape to measure all the way around your hand at the knuckles (with your fingers spread apart). Match that number to the “Finished Circumference” in the sizing chart (Size 1 starts at 5 inches, up to Size 7 at 8.5 inches).

Are these gloves worked in the round? Nope! One of the best parts about this pattern is that it is worked flat back and forth in rows. You will create a rectangle with different textures for the cuffs and body, then seam it together using the mattress stitch, leaving an opening for the thumb.

Do I need to make a separate Right and Left glove? Nope! There is no right or left side for this pattern. Both fingerless gloves are made identically, which makes the process even faster.

Can I sell the gloves I make from this pattern? Absolutely! You are welcome to sell finished items made from this pattern as long as you make them yourself (no mass production) and give pattern credit back to Just Be Crafty. However, use of my photos is prohibited.
