- 14 in. x 82 in. (35.5 x 208 cm)
GAUGE
- 11 stitches by 16 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) over Rows 23 – 38
MATERIALS
- 5 balls Lion Brand Woolspun in Taupe
- US size 11 straight knitting needles
- Tape Measure
- Gauge Checker
- Yarn Needle
- Scissors
KEY (in US terms)
- k – knit
- p – purl
- rep – repeat
- st(s) – stitch(es)
SCARF
Cast on 43 sts.
Row 1 (RS): k1, *p1, k1, rep from * across.
Rows 2 – 22: knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you.
Pattern Rows
Row 23: *k1, p2; rep from * to last st, k last st.
Row 24: Knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you.
Row 25: Knit.
Row 26: Purl.
Rep Rows 23 – 26 until piece measures about 76 in. (193 cm) from beginning, ending with a rep of Row 24.
Rib
Rep Rows 1 – 22. Bind off in rib.
Finishing
Weave in yarn ends.

I like this pattern and I trust it’s for knitters? As I don’t crochet at all. A little confused on row 2-22 knit the knits and purl the purrs does that mean like knit 1, then purl 1??same thing for row 24?? And lastly what size needle??? It was not mention at all. Thanks for help.?
Hi Belinda! Yes, this is a knitting pattern. For the beginning rows 1 – 22 you’ll just be working a 1 x 1 knit/purl ribbing by working k1,p1.
For the directions that say “knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you” help to keep you on track and ensure your either getting the ribbing (in the beginning) and getting the waffle stitch in the body of the pattern. As you look at your work, knit stitches will like v’s and purl stitches will look like a bar.
The pattern uses US size 11 straight knitting needles.

It would have been so much easier to read your pattern if you would just state.. repeat as in row 1 etc. Glad someone else thought the same thoughts as I did.

Hi Judy, thank you for your comment. This pattern language is being used more and more in modern patterns, so I thought I would give it a try. I truly think that once you get going and get to that point in the project you will find those directions are actually much more clear than specific *k1, p2, directions etc, and might save you mistakes down the road.

What do you think would be a good substitute for the warmer wool? I can’t wear wool; it would also be a little warm for Spring…want something lighter….
Hi Barb! Thanks for being here!! Lion Brand’s Color Made Easy would be a really great 100% acrylic alternative, and its fiber is a comparable thickness. You could really use any yarn you’d like, but just note that when you change up your yarn, you’ll want to adjust your needle size to the size listed on label or a size larger. And when changing up your yarn, you may need to adjust yarn amounts and sizing will differ from the finished measurements listed in the pattern. Happy knitting to you!
Hi. Was 5 skeins really enough? That seems like it won’t get to 82 inches and I want to make sure I get enough yarn. Thanks!
Hi Lee! It was the correct amount for my stitch gauge. As long as you match the gauge listed in the pattern you should have enough but if your worried about running out feel free to grab a couple extra skeins (hold on to the receipt!) and you can return extra yarn if you don’t end up needing it. I hope this helps!
